Park Street Cemetery Overview

Location
Park Street Cemetery is located on Park Street, Kolkata.

Historical Significance
Established in 1767, it is one of the earliest non-church cemeteries in the world and a heritage site. Known as the “Great Christian Burial Ground” in the 19th century, it was named after Sir Elijah Impey’s deer park. The cemetery served as a burial site for European expatriates in colonial Calcutta and closed in 1840 due to space constraints. Renovations began in the mid-2000s and include eco-friendly updates like solar lighting.

Features
Spread over eight acres, the cemetery contains around 1,600 tombs with diverse architecture blending Gothic, Indo-Saracenic, and classical European styles. Notable elements include Romanesque cupolas, Grecian urns, pyramids, and Hindu-style sarcophagi carved from black basalt.

The tranquil surroundings and historical architecture make it a significant heritage site preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India.
