Rabindranath Tagore House Kolkata
Jorasanko Thakur Bari, the ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore, is now a museum and part of Rabindra Bharati University, located near Girish Park on Chittaranjan Avenue in Kolkata. Built in 1785 by Prince Dwarkanath Tagore, the house was the birthplace and final residence of the Nobel Laureate. The name ‘Jorasanko’ comes from the twin Shiva temples nearby.
The museum was established on 8 May 1961 by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru as part of Tagore’s birth centenary celebrations. It houses three galleries showcasing Tagore’s life, family, and the Bengal Renaissance. It features rare photographs, life-size portraits, Tagore’s paintings, manuscripts, musical records, and gifts, along with works by other notable Tagore family members like Abanindranath and Maharshi Debendranath.
Today, the museum and university stand as a tribute to the literary and artistic legacy of the Tagore family and the cultural richness of 19th–20th century Bengal.
