Boral Garia Walking Tour

Boral Walks Along The Banks Of Adi Ganga River

Boral, nestled in the southern fringes of the city, holds a rich historical legacy dating back to the Sen rulers of Bengal. This area is home to the unique and revered idol of Maa Tripurasundari. It also served as the filming location for Satyajit Ray’s masterpiece Pather Panchali, shot here over three years on a modest budget around 67-68 years ago.

The Tripura Sundari Temple in Garia Boral is considered a Siddha Peeth, tracing its origins to the Sen period. During the Pala and Sen dynasties, the ancient Bhagirathi River once flowed along the temple’s eastern boundary. Legend has it that a member of the Sena dynasty excavated a pond near the temple, now known as Sen Dighi. This region flourished as a significant settlement during that era but later declined, leading the temple to fall into ruins.

In the late 17th century, Jagadish Ghosh, a zamindar from Eastern Bengal, restored the temple and expanded Boral village. However, after his passing, the temple once again fell into neglect. His ninth descendant, Shri Hiralal Ghosh, later formed a service organization to revive the temple. He collected the scattered wooden idols from the ruins, immersed them in the Ganga, and reinstated worship with a clay idol. Eventually, an Ashtadhatu (eight-metal alloy) idol was brought from Kumartuli, which is now the principal deity of worship. The temple has since been newly renovated.

Upon entering the temple complex through the majestic Lion Gate, a small shrine to the right houses a remarkable stone idol of Lord Vishnu reclining on Ananta Shesha, recovered from Sen Dighi. The temple grounds also feature several Shivalingas and other deities, adding to its sacred aura. The historic Sen Dighi pond remains an integral part of this revered site, preserving its deep-rooted connection to Bengal’s spiritual and historical past.
