Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata is considered the holiest Shaktipeeth among the 51 Shakti Peethams of India, where different parts of Goddess Sati’s body are believed to have fallen during Shiva’s Rudra Tandava. The original structure of the temple was built by Raja Basanta Roy, the uncle of Pratapaditya and King of Jessore (now in Bangladesh). Located on the banks of the Adi Ganga, the temple features a sanctum sanctorum accompanied by a spacious hall known as the Nat Mandir.
To the north-east of the sanctum lies a Shiva Temple, and within the premises, there is also a shrine dedicated to Radha Krishna. The main attraction of the temple is the idol of Goddess Kali, distinguished by a long-protruded tongue crafted from gold. The temple sees a massive influx of devotees during festivals like Kali Puja, Durga Puja, Poila Boishakh (Bengali New Year), and Sankranti.
